Waste & recycling

The organisation responsible for collecting household waste in Nijmegen is called Dar. Dar also provides services in vermin control.


Dar collects all regular household waste and compostables ('GFT' in Dutch) once a week or fortnightly. Paper for recycling is collected by charity associations on a monthly basis. The collection times depend on where you live. Every year in January/February, each household receives a calendar stating the dates when household, GFT waste and paper will be collected. To receive a new calendar, please send an e-mail to info@dar.nl (don't forget to mention your address!). Regular household waste is only collected when offered in green Dar bin bags, available at supermarkets (10 for €7.70).

Recycle paper is collected once a month and can be put out on the street curb in front of your home (packed together).

For GFT waste, Dar provides special containers. If no container is available at your house, see e-mail address and telephone number above.

Special collection containers for the recycling of glass and old clothing, shoes & textiles are placed at various locations in the city: locations of glass containers and textile containers in Nijmegen.

For larger waste (called 'grof vuil') that doesn't fit in the green bags, there are two options:

• handing it in at Dar’s Milieustraat ('Environment street') at Kanaalstraat 401, 6541 XK Nijmegen. Opening hours: Mon – Sat, 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a charge for some types of waste.
• having it collected from your home address. This is free but only possible twice a year. Please call tel. (024) 371 60 26 to make an appointment. It takes usually 7 workdays before Dar is available.
