Housing
How long it will take you to find somewhere nice to live in Nijmegen depends on what you are looking for: a room, a studio, a flat, a terraced house, or a (semi-)detached house, furnished or unfurnished, with or without curtains and carpets. And the location matters too, because what you get for your money in terms of quality and size can vary considerably according to where you want to live.
Residential property in the Netherlands will certainly be different from what you are used to at home, and flats and houses are often a little smaller. It is difficult to give a general figure for how much accommodation in Nijmegen will cost, as the figure can vary considerably depending on what you are looking for. You might pay anything from a few hundred Euros to over a thousand Euros a month. You would be best advised to contact a property agency.
If you are only going to be here temporarily, then renting is probably the most obvious route to follow. But if you would like to settle in Nijmegen permanently, then you could decide to rent or to buy.
You can find more detailed information about the various areas of Nijmegen on the following Dutch language pages: www.nijmegen.nl/wonen/wijken. Or come to Open Huis, the town information centre, and ask.
Expats
If your company has asked you to relocate to Nijmegen, it might be able to help you find a home. Radboud University Nijmegen, for example, has built an on-campus guesthouse for its foreign employees with room for 70 knowledge migrants (researchers, teachers and other new employees) with 36 and 50m² apartments, suitable for one or more persons.
Renting
Rooms, studios, flats and houses can be rented furnished or unfurnished from private landlords or agencies, some estate agents and housing associations. Housing association accommodation is often the cheapest, but the waiting lists are long and you might have to wait several years. The housing associations' website, www.entree.nu, is only in Dutch. See addresses of property agencies.
N.B.: not all these sites have pages in English.
Buying
Most residential property sold in the Netherlands is sold by estate agents who are members of trade association NVM (read more information and addresses of estate agents in Nijmegen). The property they currently have on their books is presented on www.funda.nl. There is another smaller estate agents' organisation called VBO (www.vbo.nl).
You can contact the municipal information centre Open Huis (openhuis@nijmegen.nl) if you have any questions about new-build projects in Nijmegen.
