Settling in Nijmegen
Many exchange students from all over the world come to Nijmegen to study here for a few months, a year or longer. If you don't speak Dutch, some things might not be very easy to arrange. We present some useful hyperlinks and info on this page to help you get you started.
This website contains a lot of new information written especially for expatriates (foreigners moving to Nijmegen on a temporary basis for work) and other people from abroad moving to Nijmegen. Most themes (insurance, housing, transport, visa, etcetera) might be of use to you as an international (exchange) student too, so don't forget to browse through the theme Living in Nijmegen!
Finding yourself a student room
Most students in Nijmegen rent a room in a so called 'studenthouse'. They have their private bedroom, but share the kitchen, bathroom and/or toilet with others.
The main foundation for student accommodation in Nijmegen can help you find a room in one of their (large) buildings: Stichting Studentenhuisvesting Nijmegen, SSHN. It provides accommodation for students of the Radboud University Nijmegen and institutes for Intermediate and Higher Vocational Education.
You can find yourself a rental room in a student-house, rent a room from a landlord or -lady, or rent (or even buy) a studio-apartment through accommodation offices. A list of names and addresses of accommodation offices and websites is available on this website. Rooms are also offered on the internet, among others at www.studenten.pagina.nl, where you can find several links when you click on the link ‘Kamers’.
Of course you can always place an ad in one of the daily and weekly magazines or pin up a notice (when you're here) at the University, at College or in bars and supermarkets.
If you are going to live in Nijmegen for more than 4 months, you have to report your move to Nijmegen to the Municipality of Nijmegen within 5 workdays after the actual date of moving in.
