About Nijmegen: facts & figures
Nijmegen counts about 160,000 inhabitants, and this number will continue to grow, for example because new suburbs are being built in the northern part of the city. Results of the presence of the Radboud University and the Hogeschool Arnhem Nijmegen (higher vocational education) are the relatively high percentage of inhabitants in their twenties (ex-students), a low birthrate and many smaller households.
Most of the inhabitants (about 120,000) are from Dutch origin. Overall, the other 40,000 people can be divided in groups of thousands of people originating from Turkey, Morocco, the Antilles and Aruba, Surinam, Indonesia, former Republic of Yugoslavia, Germany and Belgium, and smaller groups of hundreds from Greece, Spain, Vietnam, Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Italy, China/Hongkong, Great Britain, France and Ethiopia.
Most striking aspects of the 112,000 working inhabitants of Nijmegen, are the relatively high education level, large percentage of parttime workers and the strong emphasis on education, government and health in the economy. The employment rate is growing.
