Welcome to Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands

Foto van de kapel op de MariƫnburgNijmegen is situated in the east of the Netherlands, close to the German border and 56 kilometres from Airport Weeze. Due to its unique position on a lateral moraine on the River Waal, it has been a favourite location for residents and visitors for 2,000 years, in fact since the age of the Batavians and Romans. This makes Nijmegen the oldest city in the Netherlands.

In Nijmegen, past and present are intertwined. You can experience it for yourself. Like the Romans, high up in Valkhofpark you can admire the Dutch river landscape stretching out before you. The city is surrounded by a wonderfully varied natural environment of woods, moors, water, hills and extensive polders with meandering dykes.

Admire too the old buildings on the Grote Markt, the historic chapel combined with modern architecture on the Marienburg (see photo), or stroll down the Waalkade along Europe's busiest waterway. Discover Roman finds and modern art side by side in Museum Het Valkhof. Visit extraordinary boutiques in historic buildings and trendy shops in the modern two storey Marikenstraat. Or enjoy the lively nightlife.

Nijmegen offers something for everyone. Visit the city and be in for a surprise!
