Enjoy nature & sports
Nijmegen is surrounded by a wonderfully varied natural environment of woods, moors, water, hills and extensive polders. The perfect surroundings for outdoor sports, suitable for everyone!
What about: a game of golf, a romantic walk on the moors, running or horse riding through the hills and woodlands, swimming in one of the natural lakes or rollerblading over meandering dykes? Or how about cycling over the hills, through the polders and villages, or an ATB ride on the wooded slopes? In the city itself, large city parks provide a tranquil natural environment on your doorstep.
Take a small step out of the bustling city centre and you will find yourself in peaceful countryside. No wonder this unique region plays host to major sports events like the International Four Days Marches, the biggest walking event in the world, and the Seven Hills Run. Nijmegen’s surrounding countryside offers you a wealth of opportunities!
And top class players from Nijmegen feature prominently in sports such as basketball (Matrixx Magixx), ice hockey, cricket, judo, tae kwon do, gymnastics, football (NEC), athletics, kick boxing and rowing.
Nijmegen offers many facilities for indoor and outdoor sports, including the football stadium ‘De Goffert’, skating centre Triavium, NMHC’s hockey complex and the Hazenkamp Gymnasium. The futuristic Gymnasion is a modern on-campus sports centre subsidised for students and university staff, but other visitors (companies or private persons) are very welcome too.
