Naturally Nijmegen
In the city centre you will find three historic parks. The Valkhof and Hunnerpark, separated from each other by the Voerweg, and the Kronenburgerpark are the oldest city parks in Nijmegen. The Valkhof provides a magnificent view over the River Waal and Ooijpolder. Situated high on a lateral moraine, this is a historic strategic location.
Like the Romans 2000 years ago, high up in Valkhofpark you can admire the Dutch river landscape stretching out before you. Old ruins and a chapel remind us of the age of Charlemagne.
Kronerburgerpark is laid out in English landscape style. The 30 metre high tower ('gunpowder tower') was built as a defence tower on the city walls in 1425. Remains of these walls are also still visible.
Outside the city centre is the 'people's park 'De Goffert’ which was laid out in the 1930s to provide work for the unemployed. The fifth city park is Staddijk, a breeding area for birds. Further on, smaller parks can be found in all neighbourhoods in Nijmegen.
