Brakkenstein park

Park BrakkensteinThe wooded district of Heumensoord encroaches into the urban area close to Brakkenstein park in the south-east of the city.

The park was created by the Jurgens family around 1850. They owned the Heyendaal estate which was on this spot. The Oosterbeek-based garden designer Samuel Voorhoeve designed a beautiful landscape park, with wide grassy meadows dotted with stands of trees. The original, characteristic network of avenues has been retained. Visitors can still admire beech trees dating back to the first half of the 18th century. The park is an ideal location for walking or a game of bowls. It finally passed out of private hands in 1941. There is a restaurant in Chalet Brakkenstein.

The botanical garden in the park was laid out by the Nijmegen Catholic University in the 1970s. The Hortus Arcadië foundation has run the garden since 1998 and has restored it to its former glory. The foundation works to create a harmonious blend of natural development, garden architecture and sculpture.
