Goffert park

Goffert park, located in the heart of the city, is quite rightly called the green lung of Nijmegen. Covering 80 hectares, it is the largest park in Nijmegen.

It was laid out in the aftermath of the 1930s depression as a job creation project, costing the astronomical sum at the time of 1.3 million guilders.

The heart of the park is a huge, gently rolling grassy area where you can sunbathe, fly kites, play badminton or whatever takes your fancy. In summer, major bands and singers perform at outdoor pop concerts here, as the area is used for all kinds of big outdoor events. On Queen's Day, the park hosts a huge 'jumble sale', where hundreds of inhabitants sell their used furniture, toys, clothes, and more. Performances, food and drinks complete this family event.

The park also contains the NEC stadium De Goffert, where the local football club plays its home matches, an open air theatre, a rose garden, the Goffert Educational Nature Garden, an open-air swimming pool, a restaurant and a children’s zoo. Major refurbishment at the end of the 20th century provided facilities for (in-line) skating and basketball too. Cycling and walking paths guide you though the park.
