Nijmegen by bicycle
The bicycle is a popular means of transport in The Netherlands. On average, every Dutchman (young and old, men and women) owns one. Most places in Nijmegen are easily accessible by bike. To travel from your home to the city centre on a busy shopping day, the bicycle is the best option as you don't have to wait for a bus or queue for car parks! Furthermore, cycling in the fresh air is a good way to keep fit.
Did you know that student houses in Nijmegen can easily be recognised... by the vast numbers of old bicycles parked in the front yard? And that a so-called bicycle bridge connects the new suburbs in the northern part of Nijmegen to the older city centre for cyclists, crossing the river Waal with a magnificent view on the city's skyline?
Parking your bicycle
Road signs in the centre and near the train station mark the locations where you cannot park your bike. If you do park your bicycle in prohibited places, it may be removed by the municipality of Nijmegen and taken into custody by the AFAC. When your bike is no longer in the place you left it, please contact the AFAC, tel. +31 (0)24 6 499 599. The people of the AFAC can tell you if they have yout bike. After showing your ID and a fitting key and paying a € 10,- fine you get your bike back.
Stolen
If your bike has been stolen, you should report this to the police. This gives you the opportunity to collect it later if it is found by the police or to buy stolen bikes which have been found but not reclaimed.
Free parking
The municipal bicycle parking facilities in the city centre are free. During the day, the Bisschop Hamerstraat and Mariënburg facilities are guarded during opening hours.
