Nijmegen by bus

Different city bus lines take you wherever you want to go, easily and affordably. The main bus station in the city centre is Plein 1944. In the south of Nijmegen is the Brabantse Poort bus station. Villages near Nijmegen can be reached by regional bus lines; most of them stop at Plein 1944 and Central Station.

The website www.9292ov.nl provides a free national public transport planner (train and bus, Dutch only). The first bus leaves around six o'clock in the morning, the last one at about half past midnight.

Tickets can be bought on the bus from the driver, but it's easier and cheaper to buy a 'national strippenkaart' in advance. This blue 15 unit-ticket (for adults) costs about seven Euros. 'Strippenkaarten' are sold at tobacconists and train and bus stations. The large blue 45-unit strippenkaart for adults is the cheapest option for more frequent travellers and costs about twenty Euros, and a 'pink' discount strippenkaart for children and senior citizens costs about four and a half Euros.

The number of due units (called 'strippen') depends on the distance you travel. On average, a one way ride within the city costs about 2 to 3 units, so one strippenkaart covers around three return fares in the city. You can request an approaching bus to stop by holding up your hand (at appointed bus stops only!). You must enter the bus through the front door, where the bus driver will stamp your strippenkaart for the correct amount of 'strippen'.

When you went to get off a bus, always push the stop button just before your bus stop. If you are not sure where the stop is, you can ask the driver to let you know when to get out. And don't forget to leave through the back doors of the bus, as people usually get in at the front door at the same time.
