Nijmegen by train

snelbinderThe Netherlands have an excellent public transport system that combines city and regional bus lines and a railway system that connects most cities in the country.

Nijmegen Central Station is a five minute walk from the heart of the city, where you will find shops, bars and hotels. The smaller stations Dukenburg and Lent are extra stops for the southern and northern suburbs. A three minute ride to Heijendaal Station brings you straight from Central Station to the university campus and Radboud hospital. Nijmegen Central Station is connected to:

  • the western part of Holland (direction Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam), through Arnhem and Utrecht
  • the southern part (direction Maastricht), through Venlo
  • the southwest (direction Eindhoven) through 's-Hertogenbosch
  • Germany (transfer in Arnhem); for example Düsseldorf and Cologne are about one and a half hour away!
You can buy train tickets from the yellow ticket machines at all stations using a debit or credit card. Nijmegen Central Station also has a ticket office where cash payments are accepted. If you are a frequent train traveller, check out the cheaper options for your situation (for example the off-peak card). No tickets can be bought on the train. If you get caught travelling without a ticket, you must pay a 35 Euro fine plus the price of your ticket, and you have to show your ID. More details about your travel, departure schedules and ticket prices can be found the website of the National Railways.
